Welcome to the 16th Asian Society of Conservation Medicine Conference
“Strengthening Partnerships in Wildlife Health and Conservation”
Junpei Kimura
President of Asian Society of Conservation Medicine (ASCM)
Professor, College of Veterinary Medicine, Seoul National University, Korea
Hello. 안녕하세요(安寧(アンニョン)ハセヨ). It is my great pleasure to have this annual ASCM meeting in Jeju, Korea.
I would like to take this opportunity to recall the history and update the current situation of ASCM. The society was founded in 2005 and held the annual meetings in several Asian countries including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Taiwan, Japan and Korea. The Asian College of Conservation Medicine (ACCM) was founded by ASCM in 2012 and ACCM awards a diploma certification in conservation medicine. The primary objective of ASCM and ACCM is to advance conservation medicine in Asia and increase the competency of those practicing in this field. The current board members of ASCM consists of some of the ACCM diploma holders (from Japan, Korea, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia and Malaysia) who have been facilitating ASCM activities.
The meeting will be a great opportunity, especially for students and young researchers, to establish a network for global collaborative research and projects. I am quite sure that 소주(焼酎,Soju) and 맥주(麦酒(メクチュ), Beer) will also facilitate this networking initiative.
I would like to congratulate the great success of this annual meeting here in Jeju and hope everyone will have a wonderful and great time in this conference. Thank you, 감사합니다(感謝(カムサ)ハムニダ).
Dongin Shin
President of National Institute of Wildlife Disease Control and Prevention (NIWDC), Korea
At no time in living memory had concerns to infectious disease in the world level. In particular, people are worrying not only human being but the environment and biodiversity as zoonosis including Covid-19 or Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is stepping into our daily lives with formidable threat we have not experienced before. Preparations for global disasters such as climate change are also far from enough. In order to prepare ourselves, it is important to establish solidarity and cooperation between nations for mutual responses and collaborations.
As a representative of Korea, the National Institute of Wildlife Disease Control and Prevention (NIWDC) was established to work on One-Health system in the nation to manage domestic and international wildlife diseases comprehensively and we are at the very start of its work. I hope everyone working hard on wildlife health and conservation could have an opportunity to make a step forward to One-Health and mutually exchange through 2023 ASCM annual conference in Jeju island, Korea!

Alex Grioni
Qualification: DMV, MVS (Conservation Medicine), MRCVS, DipACCM
Affiliations: Senior veterinarian, Fauna Conservation Department, Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden, Hong Kong SAR
Alex was born and trained in Italy as a Veterinarian. From the early stages of his career, Alex was always interested in exotic animal medicine (in particular, avian medicine). He moved to Hong Kong in 1999, working for a few years in small animal practice, and then to exotic and wildlife medicine in early 2000. He has more than twenty years of veterinary experience, of which 18 were spent working at Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG), Wildlife Rescue Centre.
Throughout his career, Alex worked with many animal species and collaborated with multiple organizations on different projects and countries in Southeast Asia.
In 2012 he gained a Master of Science in Conservation Medicine from Murdoch University, which was an excellent motivation for conducting wildlife rescue and rehabilitation work.
Alex currently manages the KFBG animal collection; he is involved in the ex-situ project of the endangered Cuora tifasciata and other projects. He also leads the KFBG veterinary and rescue teams responsible for looking after about 2500 admissions annually.
Shaun Thomson
Matt Hunt
Originally from the UK, Matt has been living in Southeast Asia since 2001. He has been working with wild animals for over 30 years, initially in zoos and wildlife parks but for the past 20+ years his work has been focused on combatting the illegal wildlife trade. As Chief Executive of Free the Bears, he is responsible for overseeing projects and partnerships in Cambodia, Lao PDR and Vietnam, developing world-class bear sanctuaries, training local teams to provide optimal care and promoting environmental awareness in some of the world’s least developed countries. Within each country programme, Free the Bears has established specialist wildlife hospitals to support veterinary care and capacity-building, hosting workshops led by international specialists and building links with local veterinary schools. Matt believes that long-term conservation of wildlife in Southeast Asia will only be achieved through a combination of strengthened law enforcement and improved environmental awareness. To this end his work is increasingly focused on developing capacity for local researchers to fill gaps in our understanding of wild bears, support and training for government-led law enforcement teams, and fostering public support for conservation initiatives through innovative education programmes. He is an active member of the IUCN SSC Bear Specialist Group, serving on several Expert Teams, a past Co-chair of the Captive Bears Expert Team and current Co-chair of the Asiatic black bear Expert Team. In 2018 Matt was awarded the “Conservation in Action” medal by San Diego Zoo Global for making an active and important contribution to the conservation and recovery of endangered bears in Southeast Asia.
